Cycle syncing is the practice of adjusting your lifestyle—such as your diet, exercise, work, and social activities—to align with the phases of your menstrual cycle. The idea behind cycle syncing is to optimize well-being and performance by catering to the hormonal fluctuations that occur throughout the menstrual cycle.
As we transition into fall, it’s a beautiful time to think about how you incorporate seasonality into your business and your life. Everything we experience is a cycle: time, seasons, sleep & our circadian rhythm…and for women, our menstrual cycles. Unlike men who have a 24h hormonal cycle (🙄), a woman’s menstrual cycle is ~28 days.
As I’m sure you’ve noticed, your focus, motivation and productivity levels are NOT the same day after day after day.
And it’s frustrating AF when you want to get that task done but the way your PMS is set up… it ain’t happening.
That’s why I sync my business to my cycle to the best of my ability (it’s never a perfect system), so I can work with it instead of fighting against my cycle. This is called cycle syncing! (The term “cycle syncing” was created by Alissa Vitti, Founder of FLO Living)
Here are some ways you can cycle sync while running your business (or living your busy life).
Keep in mind, these are things that work for my body and your needs may be different. Take what you need 🌸
Contrary to early 2000’s Tampax commercials, your period does not need to be a time for high-energy activities. During your period, prioritize rest, creativity and honoring your femininity through playful and loving tasks. Your body will likely crave more sleep and less socialization, and that’s okay! Set aside time to brainstorm, vision board, draw, paint, color, etc. It’s a wonderful time for self-expression 🌈
*some researchers consider your period part of your Follicular phase, too. For the sake of this email, I’m separating it
Nothing hits quite like that boost of energy and confidence you get once your period ends. Your mood lifts, you want to be more social/active and you feel excited about your business again (IYKYK). Take advantage of this increased energy:
A woman who is ovulating is a FORCE. Ovulation is typically the time that we feel at our best. Your skin is glowing, your mood is 10/10, you want to be VERY social and you could accomplish an entire month’s work of tasks because you are a productivity machine. Do you know what i’m talking about? What I outlined for the Follicular Phase also applies here, and here are a few additional considerations:
(After ovulation, until the next cycle begins)
Dun dun dun, the two weeks of JOY was fun while it lasted. Kidding… kinda? When my Luteal Phase comes around, I take it as a sign to start to gradually slow down. You may start to crave more sleep and more calories. You may feel moody (hello PMS) and less motivated to get work done. Personally, my focus goes out the window in week two of my Luteal Phase 😅
You most likely can’t stop working for two weeks LOL, but here’s what you can do:
While it’s definitely not a perfect system, having the flexibility and self-awareness to cycle sync in my business and life is a luxury to me.
Corporate America was not created with a woman’s body in mind. And, instead of learning about our cycle in school, we are taught to suppress it (birth control), ignore it (medicate medicate medicate) and absolutely NOT speak about it. I won’t get into this today… but it breaks my heart seeing how many women are completely out of touch with their bodies, because being out of touch with your body means you’re out of touch with your intuition, too.
That being said, no matter what your schedule looks like, you can incorporate cycle-syncing practices from this post into your day-to-day.
And, if you ARE interested in having complete control over your time, schedule and energy while make money doing what you LOVE… I am ready to support you. I’d love to help you turn your vision into your reality so that you can live a life that’s attuned to your body’s rhythms.
